photography backdrop and lighting recommendations?
I have been eyeing http://www.calumetphoto.com/eng/product/calumet_on_site_portable_background_system/mp0500 this stand for quite sometime. Has anyone used it? I would like some reviews on it before I purchase it. I also am not sure it will work with the clip on backdrops. What do you suggest for lighting. I am looking for soft-boxes. I prefer those to the umbrellas. In lets say the $200- range. Thank you for your input.
I really like the background stand, but you would be limited in teh sizes of backgrounds you can use. LOVE the idea of it pulling the background tight. I think your price priorities are in the wrong spot. I'd rather go with a cheap background stand and invest in GOOD lights. For the most bang for your buck I'd drop what you are investing into the stand and put it into lights. You can DIY a stand or tack backgrounds up in the meantime. If you buy cheap lights now you will regret it later when you don't have enough power or they are crapping out on you. You are still in the budget kits, not good, higher priced stuff, but they are budget options that will last you for years over months. In the $200 range you aren't looking at the greatest light kit if you want more than one light. You aren't looking at the greatest with only one light, but it's not bad either. Adorama has some strobes that were WELL rated in Shutterbug and fall into your price range. I'd much prefer to see you go with a minimum of 300wps at the very least. You can dial down a strobe that is too powerful, but you can't squeeze more light out of a strobe that isn't strong enough. My first choice would be to see you go with one 300wps and one 150wps strobe: http://www.adorama.com/FP320MS2.html and http://www.adorama.com/FP620MK.html The larger one only comes with an umbrella, however I'd use the softbox on it and the umbrella on the 150. Totals $380 Second choice would be the lesser power and I'd go with one of these: http://www.adorama.com/FP320MS2.html with one of these http://www.adorama.com/FP320MS1.html bringing you up to about $300. Both of those have softboxes. If you can ONLY go to the $200 be smart in your investment and buy one good powerful strobe and plan to add more later. In which case I'd go with: http://www.adorama.com/FP620MK.html You will have to add a softbox to it. I am still pushing up your budget, but it's worth it to get you something that will last you as opposed to something you will dispose of and buy new.
